Cloudflare Zaraz setup: tracking through your own domain

Google Analytics 4, Google Ads, the Meta pixel and LinkedIn run through your own domain and only start once a visitor agrees in the cookie banner. Zaraz comes with its own banner, so you don’t need a second one from Cookiebot or Usercentrics. I’m Christian Schmitt, a freelancer in Bremen, and I set up Zaraz for companies in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Webflow brought me in for its tag management. You’ll find what its CTO says further down.

What is Cloudflare Zaraz?

Cloudflare Zaraz is a tag manager with a built-in cookie banner. Instead of loading Google Analytics and the Meta pixel in your visitors’ browsers, Zaraz runs them on Cloudflare’s servers. The browser only loads a small script from your domain. Up to one million events a month are free, and each additional million costs $5.

Three ways to Zaraz

Most requests fit one of these three cases. If you want a quote, I’ll send you the price for your case in writing after the free 30-minute check.

01

New Zaraz setup

For websites that have no tracking yet or whose scripts sit directly in the source code. I add the tools in Zaraz, give each one a category in the cookie banner and style the banner in your colors and fonts.

Good for

New websites, small companies with Google Analytics and the Meta pixel

02

Moving from Google Tag Manager

For websites with a GTM container and a cookie banner from Cookiebot, Usercentrics or another provider. I read out the container, rebuild every tag as a Zaraz tool and remove the container and the old banner only once all events arrive in Zaraz.

Good for

Companies with Google Ads, Meta and their own conversions

03

Audit and repair an existing Zaraz setup

For websites that already run Zaraz. I check in the browser what loads before and after consent, go through every tool and trigger and fix what is wrong. Typical findings: tools without a category that start without consent, clicks counted twice and banner texts that no longer match the setup. You get the results in writing.

Good for

Setups someone else built or nobody has checked in months

Cloudflare includes one million Zaraz events a month for free, and each additional million costs $5 (as stated in the Cloudflare documentation on April 16, 2026).

What you get with every Zaraz setup

These points are part of every project, whichever of the three ways you choose.

  • Data arrives despite ad blockers

Ad blockers block the default Zaraz path. I set up custom paths on your domain so data from visitors who agreed actually arrives.

  • Every tool with a category

In Zaraz, a tool without a category starts without consent. That’s why every tool gets one before it goes live.

  • A cookie banner in your design

Styled with my Zaraz Consent Banner Designer, in your colors and fonts.

  • Google Consent Mode v2

For Google Analytics 4 and Google Ads, checked in the Zaraz debugger.

  • Less data sent to Google and Meta

Trimmed IP addresses and stripped URL parameters, if you want them.

  • Meta Conversions API

Events go straight from Cloudflare to Meta. You create the access token, I add it.

  • Your conversions as custom events

Form submitted, appointment booked, click on phone, WhatsApp or email.

  • Tested in three states

Without consent, after consent and after withdrawal, each one checked in the browser.

  • A list for your data protection officer

Every tool with its provider, category and trigger, as the basis for your privacy policy and banner texts.

  • You keep the access

Zaraz runs in your Cloudflare account. You invite me and can remove my access at any time.

Custom paths. Instead of /cdn-cgi/zaraz/ I rename the endpoints, for example to /_zi, /_zm and /_zt. Ad blockers filter the default path by pattern.

Manual loaders. If the source code still holds a loader for /cdn-cgi/zaraz/i.js, it points nowhere after the rename: banner and tracking disappear without an error message. I move every loader along with the paths.

Cloudflare Workers. On Workers with static assets, Cloudflare doesn’t inject the Zaraz script automatically. There I add the loader to the page head by hand.

Testing in the network tab. Before consent, the only requests go to /_zi and /_zm on your domain, none to Google or Meta. After consent, /_zt reports the events and Cloudflare forwards them. I test without consent, after consent and after withdrawal.

Projects and tool

How a Zaraz setup with me works

  1. 01

    Check

In the free 30-minute check I show you what your website loads before consent. Afterwards you know which of the three ways fits.

  2. 02

    Access

You invite me to your Cloudflare account. If your domain isn’t on Cloudflare yet, I create the zone with you and carry over the mail records.

  3. 03

    Setup

I build tools, events and banner in Zaraz preview mode first and test them there before anything goes live.

  4. 04

    Sign-off

We put the before and after numbers side by side. You get the tool list for your data protection officer.

Is Zaraz right for your website?

Zaraz requires your domain to run through Cloudflare.

  • Webflow

Works with every Cloudflare plan, including the free one.

  • WordPress, Shopware, custom systems

Work if the domain runs through Cloudflare.

  • Cloudflare Workers

Work. The loader goes into the page head by hand.

  • Without Cloudflare

If your domain can’t run through Cloudflare because your IT rules it out, Google Tag Manager stays the simpler choice. I’ll tell you in the check.

Questions about Cloudflare Zaraz

I do. I’m Christian Schmitt, a freelancer in Bremen. I set up Zaraz for companies and agencies in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, move tracking over from Google Tag Manager and audit existing setups. The work happens online through your Cloudflare account, so your location doesn’t matter.

Up to one million events a month, yes. An event is a page view or a custom measurement such as a click. Each additional million costs $5. Without Zaraz Paid, Cloudflare switches Zaraz off above one million until the next billing period.

Yes. Zaraz comes with its own banner with categories and multiple languages. For the tools in Zaraz you no longer need a second banner from Cookiebot or Usercentrics.

Zaraz alone doesn’t make anything legally sound. It depends on the setup. I make sure no tool starts before consent, that you can trim IP addresses and that you get a complete tool list. Whether your setup holds up legally is something to clarify with your data protection officer or a law firm.

No, the domain stays with your registrar. Only DNS management moves to Cloudflare. I carry over the mail records so email keeps arriving.

Yes. Your team adds ready-made integrations such as Google Analytics or LinkedIn in the Cloudflare dashboard without code. You test changes in preview mode, and older versions can be restored.

What does your website load before consent?
