EmDash or WordPress? The comparison for company websites

For most company websites, EmDash is the better choice today. Plugins run in isolation, on Cloudflare there’s no server anyone has to update, and your team manages content in a clean interface. WordPress stays stronger if you need a specific plugin or want to put pages together yourself with a builder.

As of October 2026, EmDash 1.2. Sources are listed at the end of the page.

What sets the two apart

WordPress

In use since 2003 and, according to Cloudflare, running more than 40 percent of all websites. Written in PHP, runs on a server with a database. Plugins have full access to the database and files.

EmDash

From Cloudflare since 2026, built on Astro and TypeScript. Runs without a server of your own on Cloudflare, or on Node.js. Every plugin runs in its own sandbox and can only do what it declared up front.

When each one makes sense

For a company website with services, team, case studies and a blog, EmDash is the right choice. WordPress is better if you depend on a specific plugin or want to build layouts yourself.

How to edit content in EmDash

You edit content in the browser, without code and without me. The design is fixed in the code, so you can’t break it by accident while editing.

  1. 01

With a passkey: fingerprint, Face ID or your computer’s screen lock. No password needed.

  2. 02

    Open the page

Pick the page or post from the list. When you’re signed in, you can also jump straight from your website into editing.

  3. 03

    Change text and images

You type text as you would in a word processor. Drag images into the media library and select them.

  4. 04

    Save or schedule

Save as a draft, publish right away or set a date. Until then, nobody sees the change.

  5. 05

    Go back if needed

Every change creates a version. You can restore an older one at any time.

The EmDash admin is also available in German.

When WordPress stays the better choice

01

A plugin you can’t do without

A shop with many WooCommerce extensions, a members area, a booking system: if EmDash has no equivalent, the move gets expensive.

02

Building layouts yourself

With the WordPress block editor, your team builds new page layouts itself. In EmDash, the developer sets the layout.

03

A well-maintained WordPress site that works

If someone installs updates reliably, only a few plugins are in use and your team is happy, there’s no reason to rush a move.

We’ll work out which case applies to you in the free 30-minute check.

How the move from WordPress to EmDash works

  1. 01

    Inventory

I list the pages, posts, plugins and every URL of your WordPress site.

  2. 02

    Import

EmDash takes over content and media from the WordPress export or through the EmDash Exporter plugin.

  3. 03

    Rebuild

The design is rebuilt in Astro, and I replace plugin features with EmDash or custom code.

  4. 04

    Redirect

Every old URL redirects to the new one, so links and Google rankings don’t hit a dead end.

Questions about EmDash and WordPress

No. Cloudflare wrote EmDash from scratch, in TypeScript on top of Astro and without any WordPress code. That’s why it can use the MIT license instead of the GPL.

For the biggest risk, yes: according to Cloudflare, 96 percent of security issues on WordPress sites come from plugins. In EmDash, every plugin runs in isolation and can only do what it declared. A website still only becomes secure through a clean setup and updates.

No. EmDash has its own plugin system. For forms and SEO there are plugins from EmDash itself, and I rebuild anything else with custom code.

Content and URLs stay the same or get redirected. I set up a redirect for every changed URL and then check in Google Search Console that Google finds all pages.

For text, images and blog posts, yes, editing works much the same. The layout is different: in EmDash, new page templates are built by the developer, not by your team.

Cloudflare developed EmDash and released it as open source. According to Cloudflare, more than 175 people contributed up to version 1.0.
