EmDash websites with Astro that your team updates itself

I’m Christian Schmitt, a freelancer in Bremen, Germany. I build websites with EmDash, the open source CMS from Cloudflare. The design is built in Astro and loads fast. You edit text, images and blog posts in the browser, without calling me. Each plugin runs in isolation and can only do what it declared up front.

All I need for the call is the address of your current website.

What is EmDash?

EmDash is a free content management system from Cloudflare, built on the Astro web framework. Cloudflare announced it in April 2026, and the stable version 1.0 has been out since September 28, 2026. EmDash runs on Cloudflare or on any Node.js server, is MIT licensed and imports content from WordPress.

Two ways to get your EmDash website

Most requests fall into one of these two cases. If you want a quote, I’ll send you the price for your case in writing after the free 30-minute check.

01

New website with EmDash

For companies starting fresh or replacing their old site. I build the design in Astro and set up the content types in EmDash that you actually maintain: services, team, case studies, blog. Then I show your team how to change everything themselves.

Good for

Companies whose team wants to manage text, images and the blog themselves

02

Moving from WordPress

For websites that run on WordPress today. EmDash takes over posts, pages, media and custom content types from the WordPress export. The theme and plugins don’t come along: I rebuild the design in Astro, replace plugin features with EmDash or custom code, and redirect every old URL to the new one.

Good for

WordPress sites with lots of plugins, constant updates or security warnings

On Cloudflare, a simple EmDash site can run on the free plan. Isolated plugins need the Workers Paid plan, from $5 a month (according to Cloudflare’s documentation, October 2026).

What every EmDash website includes

Whether built from scratch or moved from WordPress, these are always part of it.

  • Design in Astro

Every page arrives in the browser as finished HTML. JavaScript loads only where an element really needs it. That keeps the site fast, on phones too.

  • Content types that fit your business

Services, team members, case studies or job ads get their own fields. Your team fills in fields and never has to think about the layout.

  • Sign in without a password

EmDash uses passkeys: fingerprint, Face ID or your computer’s screen lock. There’s no password for anyone to guess or phish.

  • Roles for your team

Administrator, editor, author and contributor. Someone who only writes blog posts can’t get into the settings.

  • Drafts and earlier versions

Changes stay a draft until you publish them. If something goes wrong, you restore an earlier version.

  • Scheduled publishing

Write a blog post or a promotion today and choose when it goes live.

  • Media library

Drag and drop your images in. They are stored in Cloudflare R2 or any other storage you choose.

  • SEO from day one

I set up page titles, descriptions, structured data and the sitemap so Google and AI search understand your site.

  • Tracking only after consent

If you need Google Analytics or Meta, I set up Cloudflare Zaraz with a cookie banner. Nothing is measured until visitors consent.

  • Everything in your account

Website, database and images live in your Cloudflare account or on your server. You invite me and can remove my access at any time.

When EmDash is not the right fit

01

You need a specific WordPress plugin

WordPress has tens of thousands of plugins, EmDash has a young directory. If your business depends on a shop with many WooCommerce extensions or a booking plugin with no equivalent, you’re better off staying on WordPress.

02

You want to build pages with drag and drop

EmDash is not a site builder. The layout lives in Astro components, and your team changes content, not grids. If you build new page layouts yourself every week, a page builder will serve you better.

03

Your IT rules out Cloudflare

EmDash also runs on your own Node.js server. Some new features, such as the AI site builder EmDash Build, are only available on Cloudflare.

We’ll work out which case applies to you in the free 30-minute check.

How your EmDash website comes together

  1. 01

    Check

In the free 30-minute check we look at your current website. Afterwards, you’ll know whether EmDash is right for you and which of the two ways applies.

  2. 02

    Plan the content

We decide which content your team maintains and which fields it needs. Everything else builds on that.

  3. 03

    Build

I build the design and content types on a preview address. You see every stage and can start adding content.

  4. 04

    Handover

Once the domain has moved, I show your team how to change pages, images and blog posts. The logins belong to you.

Questions about EmDash

I do. I’m Christian Schmitt, a freelancer in Bremen. I build EmDash websites with Astro for companies in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and move WordPress sites to EmDash. The work happens online, so your location doesn’t matter.

The software is free and MIT licensed. On Cloudflare, a simple site can run on the free plan, and isolated plugins need Workers Paid from $5 a month. On top of that comes my work on design and setup. You get the price in writing after the check.

Yes. EmDash imports posts, pages, media and custom content types from the WordPress export or through the EmDash Exporter plugin. The theme and plugin features don’t come along, I rebuild them.

EmDash has been considered stable since version 1.0 on September 28, 2026. Changes that break existing sites only come with new major versions. Cloudflare’s own blog has run on it since August 2026. Still, EmDash is younger than WordPress, and the choice of plugins and themes is smaller.

No. EmDash also runs on a Node.js server with SQLite or PostgreSQL, and according to Cloudflare that includes isolated plugins since version 1.0. Some newer features, such as EmDash Build, are only available on Cloudflare.

Yes, that’s what EmDash is built for. You edit text, images and blog posts in the browser and decide when something goes live. The EmDash or WordPress comparison page shows it step by step.
